Advanced GPR for archaeological survey

2013
An array GPR system equipped with 8 transmitting and 8 receiving antennas has been developed at Tohoku University, Japan. It is a Stepped Frequency Continuous Wave system and operates at 50MHz-1.5GHz. The maximum speed of data acquisition is 7km/h, when the data is acquired every 1cm density. The system was tested in a few archaeological areas near Sendai, Japan. We could demonstrate objects buried at 1m can be clearly imaged by the system, and the data acquisition of 100m by 50m area can be carried out within 2 hours. The system will be used for rehabilitation of the area from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami that attacked this region in March 2011.
