Gliosarcomas: Analysis of Braga Hospital Cases and Review of the Literature

2019
Background: Gliosarcomas are very rare tumors of central nervous system, as such, the data of the literature are scarce, which makes its approach more difficult Methods: A survey about gliosarcomas in Hospital de Braga was carried out between January 1995 and October 2013. A bibliographic review was also carried out. Results: We get a total of 18 cases and the main aim of this study was to evaluate survival according to AšAA«AžAEŒAžnAEš variables (age, gender, timAž symptoms to diagnose, karnofsky, MRI necrosis, MRI mass AžA«AžcAEšI• MRI edema, proximity to the dura-mater, lobar A¯A½cA‚tiA½nI• hemispheric A¯A½cA‚tiA½nI• tumor size, gliosarcoma type, macroscopy, type of AEŒAžAEAžctiA½nI• adjuvant treatment and mAžAEšA‚AEtiCŒA‚tiA½nI?I˜ The factors associated with a bAžAE©AžAEŒ survival were: age inferior to 50 years old, female gender, karnofsky >80, timAž symptoms to diagnose <1 month, necrosis <50% tumor volume, midline AEAšAAŒ <0.5 cm, edemadura-mater, size <5 cm, occipital lobe, A¯AžAŒ hemisphere, primary type, macroscopy similar to glioblastoma, radical AEŒAžAEAžctiA½nI• adjuvant RT, non mAžAEšA‚AEtiCŒA‚tiA½nI˜ There were two factors with AnA‡AEµAžncAž on survival and AEAEšA‚tiAEticA‚A¯A¯y AEAAnAA®cA‚nAEš p value: midline AEAšAAŒ less than 0.5 cm and A¯A½cA‚tiA½n in the A¯AžAŒ hemisphere. Conclusion: This sample presents some factors with AžA«AžcAEš on the survival and that can be taken into account in the approach of these tumors
