Sclera/Ciliary Body/Anterior Segment

Ophthalmic ultrasonography can be successfully applied for imaging of the structures of the anterior segment such as the conjunctiva and sclera, the iris, and the ciliary body, providing high-resolution imaging of ocular structures anterior to the pars plana. The most commonly used technique is ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) sector scan, using high-frequency (50 MHz) probes to provide reproducible cross-sectional images. The prerequisite for UBM imaging as a contact technique is application of a coupling medium for image resolution enhancement. The image resolution may thus vary from 40 to 70 microns and requires an experienced examiner. The angular field of view is somewhat limited to standard B-scan [1–4].
