Three Dimensional Disaster Monitoring of the Pohang Earthquake in the Republic of Korea by Sentinel-L

2018
For a reason of limitations of optical data depending on weather conditions, the utilization of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data has been regarded as a complementary tool for understanding disaster field situations in recent years. Coincidentally, there were two large-scale earthquakes above magnitude 5.0 within the last a year in Korea. In this study, a Differential Interferometry SAR(DInSAR) technique is applied to analyze the ground deformation and its influence range by Pohang earthquake in Korea. Then the direction of the deformation was estimated in 3-dimension. Results show that the maximum of 5 cm uplift is observed in area covering 10km radius from the epicenter, and the principal direction appeared in north-northeast. More elaborated and continuous monitoring based on SAR data will need to make proper measures for expected future earthquakes.
