Hypoglycemic effect of Cortex Lycii Radieis extract and its analysis of compounds

2007
Cortex Lycii Radieis(CLR)as one of the traditional oriental medicines has been used to treat antipyretic, attenuating pneumonia, cough, haematemesis, gangrene of the extremities and diabetes mellitus for centuries. This study aims at revealing effects of CLR on alloxan-induced diabetic mice and its mechanisms.According to thin layer chromatography(TLC)assay, the main compounds of CLR included organic acid, alkaloide, anthraquinone and saponin. The mice were divided into four groups: normal control(NC),diabetes control(DC),diabetes+CLR high dose(200 mg/kg),diabetes+CLR low dose(100 mg/kg).The diabetic mice were administrated by CLR daily for 28 days, resulted in significant decreases of fasting blood glucose(FBG),total cbolesterol(TC)and triglycerides(TG).The rates of decreasing of blood glucose were 36.72%(CLR low dose)and 41.89% (CLR high dose).CLR also showed a tendency of improvement body weight gain on diabetic mice. The results indicate that CLR would alleviate the blood glucose and lipid rising associated with diabetes, and improve the abnormal glucose metabolism and in- crease insulin secretion by restoring the impaired pancreaseβcells in alloxan-induced diabetic mice mode, which suggest that Cortex Lycii Radieis has the hypoglycemic potential and could be useful on the diabetes therapy.
