Acute Renal Failure as a Complication of Maxillofacial Surgery

2018
Acute kidney injury continues to remain one of the most common yet serious complications of surgical patients. Despite having multiple definitions and criteria for diagnosing acute kidney injury along with introduction of new novel markers, acute kidney injury continues to be underdiagnosed, and the prevalence continues to rise. Patients who develop acute kidney injury or even small rises in serum creatinine have an increased risk of morbidity, mortality, and prolonged hospitalization. Medical therapies remain limited, and there are few advances in care and treatment. The cornerstone of therapy remains early recognition of preventable risk factors, early detection of renal pathology, and early consultative care with a nephrologist and targeted therapy to prevent further progression of kidney disease and promote renal recovery.
