Studies of ringwomb in Black Bengal goats (Caprahircus)

1992
Abstract The occurrence of ringwomb and resultant kid mortality along with response to manual dilation of the cervix for 30 minutes, estradiol benzoate (2.5 mg i.m.) and prostaglandin F 2 α analog (PG analog) treatments were conducted in 16 Black Bengal goats ( Capra hircus ) over a period from January 1988 to March 1990. Ringwomb is more frequently observed in the young subject than the old (63 vs 38%). Recumbency rate due to ringwomb was 56%. The total mortality rate of kids was 31%, while the mortality rate of kids with manual dilation, estradiol, PG analog injections and Caesarean section were found to be 60, 50, 18 and 30%, respectively. PG analog gave satisfactory results in ringwomb condition (78%), which was followed by estradiol treatment (40%), while manual dilation showed poor response (12%). All cases not responding to manual or hormonal treatments were subjected to a Caesarean section. It may be concluded that ringwomb in does may be treated successfully with PG analog. However, when treatment is unsuccessful, kids may have to be removed by Caesarean section.
