Estudio bioac´ustico comparativo preliminar de la poblaciÓn de ranita meridional (Hyla meridionalis, Boettger, 1874) del Pais Vasco

2003
A limited, preliminary sample of the advertisement calls of the relictual population of Hyla meridionalis in Mendizorrotz Mountain, (Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain) was studied and compared with the advertisement calls from a population of Portalegre in Portugal. No significant differences were found in call dominant frequency. Call duration and number of pulses per call (corrected by temperatures and calculated at 15°C) were significantly different between populations. The population of Gipuzkoa had shorter calls and less pulses per call at the same air temperature. These results may reflect population differences due to the relictual status of H. meridionalis in Gipuzkoa. Although an alternative explanation can be that the results are an artefact due to the fact that the recordings from Euskadi had higher background noise levels due to the characteristics of the recording equipment used and that pulses at the beginning and end of the call, with les amplitude, may be masked by the noise.
