1995
In 1993 the Rockefeller Foundation awarded a grant to the Navrongo Health Research Center (NHRC) to support the Community Health and Family Planning Project (CHFP) an experiment assessing the demographic impact of a primary health care and family planning program in rural northern Ghana. In May 1994 the Population Councils Operations Research and Technical Assistance Project joined the Rockefeller Foundation as a donor for the activity. Over the July 1994 to June 1995 period the first phase of the project was completed baseline sociodemographic research conducted and the stage set for large-scale implementation of an experimental service delivery program. This report reviews project activities over that period. During the reporting period the Navrongo Demographic Surveillance System was developed and refined; a program of panel survey research to monitor the impact of the project upon family planning knowledge and use preferences and social interaction was launched; a village-based service delivery system was launched in February 1994 in a three-village pilot study; and dissemination activities began.
