Planning, Implementing and Installing a Mutual Patient Administration System for the Medical Schools in Bavaria

1985
In the past the Bavarian universities’ medical schools have pooled their efforts and developed a mutual computerized patient administration system. Two of these medical schools are located in Munich, one in Erlangen and one in Wuerzburg. The system’s main aim is to support the hospital administration for three comprehensive centralized hospitals and about 30 smaller hospitals with a total of more than 8.000 beds. The total patient admissions amount to about 170.000 inpatients p.a. and 600.000 outpatients p.a. A modular, four level scheme was developed and implemented with a centralized data base for each medical school [1–10]. The concept avoids the draw-backs of total centralization as well as the problems incurred by total distribution of data storage and processing.
