Numerical Simulations and Performance Comparison of Air-Blast and Pressure Jet Atomizers

2011
2The paper numerically investigates particle breakup and resulting atomization characteristics of Jet A liquid fuel and provides comparison of performance characteristics for pressure-jet and air-blast atomizer configurations. ANSYS-CFX© RANS solver is used to conduct the steady state analyses at different time scales. By employing a Lagrangian particle tracking method to track the path of the liquid particles, the liquid jet/spray phenomena are studied for low and high back-pressure environments. The BLOB primary breakup model and the Cascade Atomization and Breakup (CAB) secondary breakup model are incorporated for analyzing the atomization phenomena. Parameters taken into consideration include the JetA liquid Sauter Mean Diameter, Jet A Liquid Average Velocity, and the turbulent kinetic energy.
