AN ENVIRONMENTAL EVALUATION OF A NEW SYSTEM

This paper reports a process of environmental appraisal of the effects of introducing a system like cabtrack into central London. The characteristics of the system are first considered: cabstops, track, cabs. Criteria for the assessment of the impact of the system are presented and illustrated. The problem of changing a network to avoid conservation areas, listed buildings, areas of good visual quality and narrow streets but take advantage of the opportunities provided by redevelopment areas and inaccessible areas are discussed. It is concluded that the system has sufficient flexibility not to involve excessive environmental costs.
