Peripheral Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation

Although radiofrequency ablation has been well documented for spine and joint indications, it has also been utilized for nonspinal pain when a single nerve or group of nerves can be selectively targeted. As with more traditional uses of radiofrequency ablation for (i.e., facet joint denervation), it is important to rule out other treatable etiologies of pain. Diagnostic blocks provide insight into achievable pain relief prior to proceeding with radiofrequency ablation. Case reports, case series, and meta-analysis have shown efficacy for varying types of radiofrequency in these particular applications. Limitations of the available evidence is the lack of larger studies or randomized controlled trials. There are varying techniques and types of imaging guidance utilized for visualization. Despite these limitations, radiofrequency ablation and pulse radiofrequency are both minimally invasive procedures with relatively low complication rates.
