Goals of therapy and concurrent lifestyle interventions to compliment endoscopic bariatric and metabolic interventions

2020
Abstract Obesity affects 39.6 of adults in the United States and is a risk factor for many diseases including but not limited to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Weight loss can reduce the risk of these diseases, but weight loss of ≥10% total body weight are likely needed to see reduction in endpoints including myocardial infarction, stroke, and liver fibrosis. This magnitude of weight loss is difficult to achieve with lifestyle intervention alone. In clinical practice treatment with endoscopic bariatric therapies in conjunction with lifestyle intervention have demonstrated weight loss ≥10% total body weight. Several lines of evidence indicate that the intensity of lifestyle intervention affects overall weight loss seen with endoscopic bariatric therapies. Moreover, tailoring the lifestyle intervention to compliment the mechanism of action of the endoscopic bariatric therapy may enhance weight loss further.
