Dynamic coefficients for gas film face seal

2002
The small perturbation method and the finite element method were used to calculate the stiffness and damping coefficients of a gas film with three degrees of freedom for a gas film face seal. The analysis considers hydrostatic and hydrodynamic effects of several typical face configurations. Numerical results show that the interaction between axial and angular perturbations is so small that can be neglected. So in actual engineering analyses the three degrees of freedom can be simplified as two independent perturbations for further stability analysis and force vibration response analysis, one is the axial movement while the other is the angular wobble. Sample case validates the present analysis.
