Investigating the accumulation of sediment in lake Nylandssjön using splines : A piece in the puzzle of reconstructing past climate

2015
In this thesis monotone splines are used to investigate how sediment, during a year, accumulates at the bottom of the lake Nylandssjon in northern Sweden. It is confirmed that the accumulation rate changes over the year, with apparent increases around early May and in late summer/early autumn. Explanations for this are searched for in meteorological data resulting in indications of that both the time of the ice break-up of the lake and the precipitation in the area around the lake could be of relevance to the sedimentation process. Investigated is also how this increased understanding of the sedimentation process could be beneficial in the work of reconstructing historical climate using so called varved lake sediment.
