The paper describes a model of identity that has evolved during the study the author of modern Japan. This model consists of two layers, one of which is composed of professional, family, gender and age levels, and second, the emerging national-ethnic, religious, territorial levels. Such separation of layers due to the fact that the levels of one layer are determined by the individual, and other levels are determined externally, but it is relative, since the levels interdependence and intertwined with each other.
