Leadership development of women in Australian workplaces: An intersectional analysis

2017
This research examines the impact of the interactions of women’s gender and cultural identities on their leadership development process. This study uses an intersectionality-informed qualitative methodology to collect and analyze data from ten participants at the University of Melbourne. The main findings show that depending on the gender stereotypes in their own culture and equivalent in a new culture, women evaluate their own capabilities and the opportunities available to them differently, and this affects their ascension into leadership roles. This research makes the first step in demonstrating that there are under-researched problems faced by women from more genderintegrated cultures working in Australian organizations in their path to attaining leadership roles. The practical and theoretical implications of the findings are discussed.
