Histopathological Study and Determination of Abomasums Bezoars on Slaughtered Sheep in Tabriz Abattoir

2012
Gastrointestinal bezoars are prevalent phenomenon in ruminant and most occur in inefficient management conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluation of abomasums bezoars frequency and subsequent pathologic complications in east Azerbaijan, Iran. In this study amount 10240 Ghezel and Makoei sheep which slaughtered in Tabriz abattoir were selected by chance in an eight-month period. Age, sex and race of afflicted sheep and also type of bezoars were detected. Samples were obtained from pyloric and bottom of the abomasums to pathological studies. Of 10240 understudying sheep, 260 sheep were suffered to abomasums bezoars of these 135 sheep belonged to Ghezel and 125 belonged to Makoei. Also of these, 235 suffered sheep were female and the remnants were male. 20 cases of patients were in the 1-3 age range and 91 cases were in the 3-5 age range and 149 cases were in the 5-7 age range. In 33 cases the type of bezoars was phytobezoars, 39 cases trichobezoars and 186 cases was phytotrichobezoars. 248 cases of patients have pathologic abomasal complications such as hyperemia, edema, necrosis, discontinuity of epithelial, superficial mucosa erosion and varying degrees of inflammation. In some cases, perforation of hairy or herbal fibers into abomasums mucosa was observed especially in pyloric area. In statistical analysis by chi-square test there weren't significant differences among two races from suffering to abomasal bezoars. The prevalence of abomasal bezoars in females was significantly higher than males (p<0.05). Also the most patients were allocated to 5-7 age ranges. Phytotrichobezoars were significantly more commonly than two others (p<0.05). By use of chi-square test revealed that there are significant relationship between abomasal bezoars and concomitant pathologic complications (p<0.05). Also there was significant relationship among age and frequency of bezoars. Sheep, Abomasal bezoars, Histopathological studies.
