Visual outcomes following customized laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in myopic and hyperopic eyes with and without astigmatism
2010
PURPOSE: To evaluate the visual results of customized, wavefront-guided LASIK in
myopic and hyperopic eyes.
SETTING: CHU Bordeaux, France.
METHODS: In this retrospective analysis of a consecutive case series, 142 eyes (56 male,
86 female) were available for follow-up. Sixteen eyes were hyperopic or hyperopic with
astigmatism (HHA) and 126 were myopic or myopic with astigmatism (MMA). Pure or
mixed astigmatic eyes were excluded. Mean age of enrolled patients was 34 (range 18-55).
Mean preoperative sphere in HHA eyes was +2.87±0.89 (+1.50 to +4.50) and –4.50±1.56
(-8.50 to –0.25) in MMA eyes. Mean preoperative cylinder in HHA eyes was -0.78 ± 0.64
(–2.00 to 0.00) and -1.10±0.91 (–4.00 to 0.00) in MMA eyes. All surgery used VisX Star
S4IR Excimer Laser with CustomVue software.
RESULTS: Attempted correction in HHA and MMA eyes used manifest refraction to target
plano results. One month postoperative, 16 HHA eyes and 126 MMA eyes were available
for evaluation. Mean spherical correction in HHA eyes was –2.58 ± 0.93 and mean
cylindrical correction was +0.36±0.66. In MMA eyes, mean spherical correction was
+4.56±1.59 with mean cylindrical correction of 0.83±0.89. Of HHA eyes, 81% were within
±0.50 D of intended sphere correction, 69% for cylinder. Of MMA eyes, 88% were
within ±0.50 D of intended sphere outcome, 82% for cylinder.
CONCLUSION: Customized, wavefront-guided treatment for simple and astigmatic
myopia and hyperopia produces excellent refractive outcomes, even in eyes with moderate
to high levels of refractive error
