The midwife program in the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS)

More than seventy years ago some isolated efforts were initiated in Mexico to train lay midwives also generically called traditional midwives. These effors arose out of health authorities concern with reducing problems of infant and maternal morbi-mortality related to the participation of midwives in basic care during birth and puerperium and care of the newborn above all in rural areas.
