An association between errors in the implementation and in the inspection of this model causes failures that can trigger environmental disasters. The ruptures of tailings located in the cities of Mariana and Brumadinho caused damage to the environment and society. These happenings are classified as environmental crimes and as non-passer-by crimes (those that leave traces) according to the current Brazilian legal system. Because of this, the work of the criminal investigation becomes indispensable. Thus, the present study aimed, based on a systemic bibliographic review, to present and discuss the findings regarding the tragedies of Mariana and Brumadinho associated with expert work. It was noticed the absence of scientific publications that addressed this association. Only a report prepared by the Federal Police was found.
