PM: Worth Its Weight in Gold

2007
In this article the authors explain the benefits of preventative maintenance (PM), including reduced life-cycle costs for traffic signalization. Two public works departments are discussed, one in Reno, Nevada and the other in Hernando County, Florida, both of which have implemented a PM program. Both locales have recently begun their respective PM programs with promising early results. Reno has saved $125,000 per year and experienced a rapid increase in preventative maintenance calls with a corresponding downturn in response calls, which is the more expensive of the two. Hernando Country has experienced a savings of $47,000 and a 27 percent reduction in complaint calls. The article also lists the salient preparatory steps each region took prior to adopting PM.
