Advanced Texture Analysis in Cork Quality Detection

2007
In this paper we study advanced texture analysis techniques in order to solve a classification problem existing in the cork industry: the cork stopper/disk quality classification. Cork is a material that can be mostly found in the occidental shores of the Mediterranean sea and its production has a great importance in those areas. Due to cork is a natural and heterogeneous material its automatic quality detection (usually, seven different quality classes exist) is difficult, but necessary in the cork industry. After previous studies, we know that cork stopper/disk quality can be detected by its texture. In this work we evaluate the performance of two advanced texture analysis techniques: Laws textures and Varma-Zisserman textures. Due to these two techniques are very different we have obtained different results. As conclusion we can state Laws texture measures widely improve our previous results using texture analysis, being suitable for this industry.
