Effect of sunlight transformed by luminophore-containing materials on cell functions in vitro and in vivo.

2015
Effect of sunlight transformed by luminophore-containing materials on cell viability and functional state of the retina was assessed using the photodamage model. Exposure to the luminescent component of light improved viability of NIH 3T3 cells and promoted recovery of electric activity in rabbit retina after photodamage. Modern techniques for retina photoprotection after cataract phacoemulsifi cation surgery suppose incor- poration of yellow pigments absorbing UV and blue components of solar light into the material of intraocu- lar lenses (IOL). We propose a new approach to retina photoprotection based on incorporation into the IOL materials of nanofl uorochromes transforming hazard- ous UV and blue light into the orange-red light. This approach is based on the evidence that orange-red light promotes retinal recovery after physical and chemical damage (4). The aim of this study was to investigate the ef- fect of sunlight converted by luminophore-containing materials on cell viability and functional state of the retina under conditions of photodamage.
