Algorithmic art
2009
The goal of this workshop is to learn about a fun and educational courses that are designed to expose non-traditional computer students to computing through the field of art. The workshop will cover the following topics:
• Mental Models that beginning programming students have about programming.
• Using Scratch as an introduction into programming concepts.
• Why teaching in context might have more success in reaching students then a traditional CS0 or CS1 course. Cross referencing projects and concepts to make the transition from art creation to computational thinking.
• Using the programming language Processing to do Algorithmic Art while incorporating traditional art design concepts. How to use symmetry from abstract algebra combined with transformations (translate, scale, rotate) to create Escher-like images. The taxonomy of algorithms that exist and their relationship to programming concepts, algorithms, and art.
