Study on the effectiveness of early intervention for behavior problems of primary school students

2008
[Objective] To evaluate the effectiveness of early intervention for behavior problems of primary school students.[Methods] A total of 1 482 students from two primary schools in Jinan were surveyed by Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL),and then each school was randomly assigned into the study group(738)or the control group(744).The study group was given comprehensive psychological interventions for two years, while the control group was not given any intervention.[Results] According to CBCL,the prevalence of behavior problems in the study group and the control group were 14.8%(109/738)and 15.2%(113/744)respectively,without significant difference. After the two-year intervention, the prevalence in the study group was reduced to 8.8%(64/738)and that in the control group remained at the similar level as 14.1%(102/744),which showed a significant difference(P0.01).The score of each factor in CBCL in the study group was also reduced significantly.[Conclusions] Comprehensive psychological intervention can improve the mental health and reduce the prevalence of behavior problems of primary school students.
