THE EFFECT OF SALTS ON STEELS AND PROTECTIVE COATINGS

1995
Salt contamination of steel surfaces is frequently encountered during construction and commissioning of power plant. NNC has attempted to define the maximum allowable limits depending on the substrate and subsequent use. In particular, two research programmes are discussed here. One, the incidence of stress corrosion cracking and intergranular attack of stainless steel exposed to a moist air. The second, a 6 1/2-year exposure to the atmospheric environment of alkyd paints applied to pre-contaminated carbon steel.
