Radiation Balance of Spent Nuclear Fuel of a Fast Reactor and Natural Uranium

2015
The irradiation dose to humans before and after deep burial of the actinides in the spent nuclear fuel of a fast reactor is evaluated. It is found that after 300–400 years radiation balance between the natural uranium and radioactive wastes according to the total dose of external and internal irradiation can be reached by separating americium from the spent fuel for transmutation with ~1% content in the wastes without burial and up to 10% with deep burial.
