Electric Field Distribution for the Characterization of Planar and Recessed Electrodes

2009
In the development of neural prostheses electrodes are a key component to interface technical devices with biological environment. Through micromachining methods electrodes can be fabricated in small form factors and good reproducibility. Two major designs can be produced by micromachining, planar and recessed. This paper compares the electric field distribution of the two electrode designs and characterizes them. An overview of common electrodes used for neural prostheses is given and the electrical field distribution is shown.
