Experimental study of thermal properties of concrete with partial replacement of coarse aggregate by coconut shell

2019
Abstract The utilization of coconut shell (CS) as a substitute for natural gravel aggregate in concrete is an effective way for a sustainable concrete construction practice and it acts as a carbon sink. In the present study, the thermal properties of coconut shell aggregate concrete (CSAC) were analysed. The most relevant thermal properties such as thermal conductivity, specific heat and thermal diffusivity were found. 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% replacement of coarse gravel aggregate by coconut shells were considered in the study. CSAC with 40% replacement ratio was found to be satisfying the necessary criteria for thermal insulating concrete according to the Codal provisions.
