In the course of an extensive study of antinuclear antibodies in lupus patients and their family members, three conclusions were reached: conformational epitopes were exceptionally targetted, one linear epitope per protein was immunodominant, and some antibodies correlated to the age whereas others were related to the inbreeding coefficient.
