Synthesis of p-Cumylphenol Using Cationic Exchange Resin Catalyst

p -CumylphenolwassynthesizedbyFriedel-Craftsalkylationofphenol with α -methylstyrene in the presence of D 72 strong acid type cationic exchange resin catalyst.The effects of molar ratio of phenol/ α -methylstyrene,amount of D 72 strong acid type cationic exchange resin catalyst,reaction temperature and reaction time on the yield of p -cumylphenol were investigated.The optimum reaction conditions were molar ratio of phenol/α-methylstyrene,85 ℃,5 h of reaction time and 5% of catalyst.The yield of p -cumlphenol was 97 0%.The D 72 strong acid type cationic exchange resin catalyst can be recovered easily,regenerated and reused to give almost the same yield as that given by fresh catalyst.
