This chapter forms the core of the book because it includes the extensive pictorial atlas part. The text part introduces the molecular expression patterns that we have selected to illustrate specific neurogenetic processes such as lateral inhibition among neural stem cells (notch), proliferation (PCNA, BrdU), determination (basic helix-loop-helix genes neurogenin/neurod), and differentiation (Hu, GABA) during zebrafish secondary neurogenesis. The chapter also provides comprehensive neuroanatomical descriptions of the documented expression patterns for the entire larval zebrafish brain. The chapter closes with the photographical documentation of complete series of immunohistologically stained or in situ hybridized cross sections of the brains of 2- to 5-day-old larval zebrafish.
