Kinetic study of the crystallization of ZrF4BaF2LaF3AlF3 glasses

1989
Abstract The crystallization kinetics of ZrF 4 BaF 2 LaF 3 AlF 3 glasses, with the addition of different amounts of InF 3 , have been studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Values for the activation energy of crystallization ( E ), Hruby parameter ( K g1 ) and the transformation temperature T g over the melting temperature T m ,( T g / T m ), were determined. The results show that when the appropriate amount of InF 3 was added E , K g1 and T g / T m increased, the resistance to crystallization improved and the glass-forming ability increases. The amounts and types of the crystalline phases formed dependend on the InF 3 content. The effects of InF 3 on the ZBLA glass properties are fairly similar to the anomalous effects for some glasses containing boron. A glass having better properties is obtained with the addition of 1.0 mol% InF 3 .
