Elastic and inelastic scattering of sup 36 Ar on sup 208 Pb at 575 MeV beam energy

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 575 MeV {sup 36}Ar on {sup 208}Pb to low-lying states of both target and projectile nucleus were studied. The measured cross sections were analyzed with coupled-channels calculations. A very satisfying description of the data was obtained by using {ital B}({ital EL}) values from the literature and proper optical potential parameters. The latter were used as basis to estimate the cross sections for the excitation of the isovector giant dipole and isoscalar giant quadrupole resonances.
