Compliance with CPAP therapy for patient with obstructive sleep apnea

2018
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is treatment of choice for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). There is a lack of studies on compliance of CPAP therapy in Korea. This study aims to evaluate the adherence to CPAP therapy of patients with OSA in Korea. We reviewed the data of compliance, polysomnography (PSG), and clinical characteristics of patients with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≧ 5. Base on this, we analyzed the factors associated with adherence to CPAP therapy. We included 64 patients who had been diagnosed with OSA (AHI ≧ 5) and had done CPAP titration based on overnight PSG. Of 64 OSA patients were prescribed to CPAP therapy, 45 (70.3 %) patients accepted to initiated on CPAP. Of 45 patients, 36 (80 %) patients continued to use and 9 (20 %) patients were declined. 22 (48.9%) patients were good compliance (percent of days with usage over 4 hours ≧ 70 %) for CPAP therapy. Good compliance for CPAP therapy was associated with BMI (R2=0.284, OR=0.790, p=0.023). In our sleep center experience, adherence of CPAP therapy was 80 % and proportion of patients with good compliance was 48.9 %. And good compliance for CPAP therapy was associated with BMI.
