THE SIMULATION OF SHIP MOTIONS AND CAPSIZING IN SEVERE SEAS

1989
A numerical model has been developed to determine the large amplitude motions of a steered vessel subjected to severe wave conditions, including those that may lead to capsizing. The aim was to numerically identify different modes of capsizing that had been observed experimentally, and to study the mechanisms and conditions that could lead to capsizing. The various force components that occur in the large amplitude equations of motion were examined, and an analysis was carried out to determine the sensitivity of the roll response to changes in those components. Particular attention is paid to the ship behavior and its simulation in irregular following and quartering seas
