Measurement of water content of deposited snow by centrifugal methode

1954
The authers made a study on the method of separation of free water content in Snow by the centrifagal separator, with the number of rotation of 1800/min.This separator has snow jackets (Fig. 5) for interception of the effect of air temperature and 0°C gasoline is used as medium oil. Gasoline can easly separate free water from snow particles and can easly drive out the air bulbles in snow.By this study, it is concluded that the centrifugal method is one of the excellent methods for measuring the free water content of snow. The charactoristic points of this method are as follows : 1. This method has high accuracy. (the error is under 2% by weight) 2. This method is very convenient in field work, because the time for measurement is short (for one trial it takes about 10 min.) the equipment is light in weight and is simple (the total weight is about 5 kg).The shortcoming of this method is that ;Free water in new snow and settled snow cannot be fully separated, leaving about 58 % water by weight constantly.
