Sexually transmitted diseases in Zambia.

1987
THE HIGHER prevalence of Sexually Trans mitted Diseases (STDs) such as syphilis and gonorrhoea is one of the health problems among the major diseases in Zambia today in spite of the available medical care for these diseases. In addition there is a new and more serious Autoimmune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) among the STDs. Are there any measures that might successfully assist in bringing about the control of these diseases? In this paper an attempt has been made to answer this question in order to help the Health Authorities in their efforts to combat these diseases by implementing, as an 'Action Research', a simple Control Strategem making full use of the available resources and facilities. Nurses are seen as a major resource and school and other local buildings as possible facilities to be used in the strategem. The paper also suggests that all health workers should apply the discussed psychological approach guidelines in all activities of treatment, health education, contact- tracing and counselling.
