System and Utilization Study of Japanese Experiment Module for International Space Station

1990
The paper briefly reviews the overall system study of Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) which consists of Pressurized Module, Exposed Facility and Small Remote Manipulator System (RMS). JEM design is conducted based on Japanese technology and effort is primarily directed toward the mechanical and electrical performances. Capabilities regarding the crew habitation and life support subsystem rely upon NASAs Module. Another aspect of the Space Station is its scientific utilization. Potential uses are explored in the areas such as astronomy, astrophysics, earth observation, life science, material & fluid sciences and technology development. Also experimental equipments and facilities are under study. Emphasis is placed upon the safety and reliability considerations to the hardware and software designs.
