The present technology relates to a playback device, playback method, and program that make it possible to control the processing of H.264/MPEG-4 MVC encoded data in accordance with the value of a flag. A playback device in one aspect of the present technology is provided with the following: a setting unit that sets the value of a flag that indicates whether or not the playback device is capable of decoding H.264/MPEG-4 MVC encoded data; and a playback control unit that controls the playback of H.264/MPEG-4 MVC encoded data in accordance with the value of the aforementioned flag and outputs images obtained thereby to a display device.
