STUDIES OF TESTOSTERONE METABOLISM IN A PATIENT WITH MASCULINIZATION DUE TO STROMAL HYPERTHECOSIS

1968
THE occurrence of masculinization in the adult woman generally implies the presence of an ovarian or adrenal tumor. There are, however, rare reports of masculinization associated with such entities as polycystic ovary, hyperthecosis and hilarcell hyperplasia. In none of these cases has androgen production been studied intensively. The case reported below concerns a patient with virilization and hyperthecosis (thecomatosis, thecosis or diffuse luteinization of the ovarian stroma) of the ovaries. Measurement of ovarian and peripheral venous testosterone levels showed that the ovaries were secreting testosterone in quantities sufficient to account for the virilization.
