THE SPECTRA OF MANGANESE AND COBALT IONS IN FUSED HALIDES. Technical Progress Report

1961
The optical absorption spectra of Mn(II) and Co(II) in alkali chloride and bromide melts are presented. Analysis of the spectra reveals that in all four cases the transltion metal ions are surrounded by the four halide ions In tetrahedral arrangement. In view of the fact that Ni(II) was found to be tetrahedral also, it seems likely that the tetrahedral is one especially favored by the local structure in the melt. (auth)
