The invention relates to a novel low-smoke halogen-free building cable insulation material and a preparation method thereof. The insulation material comprises the following components in percentage by weight: 5-40% of polyethylene, 1-20% of polypropylene, 1-20% of thermoplastic elastomer (POE), 0-20% of ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM), 10-50% of aluminum hydroxide, 10-50% of magnesium hydroxide, 0.5-10% of compatilizer, 0.5-5% of stabilizer, 0.5-5% of silicone master batch and 0.5-4% of silane coupling agent. The cable insulation material provided by the invention has the advantages of high safety, energy saving and environment friendliness.
