On the occasion of Walter Kaspers 80 th birthday, the present article attempts to survey his entire thinking and to identify the key theological category. We will find it in Kasper's soteriological approach to christology, which is explained by a closer look at his interpretation of the Council of Chalcedon and the concept of person. By its reliance on Schelling's Positive Philosophy Kasper's thinking turns out to be particularly useful and relevant to respond theologically to the modern desire for freedom.
