Género, violencia y poder: el femicidio en la prensa chilena

espanolEl femicidio –asesinato de mujeres por razones de genero– es una expresion extrema de la violencia de genero. Este articulo explora la construccion periodistica de este tipo de hechos en tres periodicos de circulacion masiva en Chile, bajo el supuesto teorico de que la violencia contra la mujer es un fenomeno que tiene sus raices en representaciones sobre el genero y las relaciones de pareja instaladas en la cultura que los medios de comunicacion pueden ayudar a mantener o, por el contrario, a des-naturalizar. En el caso analizado, argumentamos, los textos periodisticos presentan una construccion textual ambivalente que, aunque condena explicitamente la violencia, al mismo tiempo refuerza entendimientos estereotipados de las relaciones de genero y de pareja para construir la noticia. Con ello, favorecen la justificacion de la violencia al obscurecer el contexto socio-cultural y estructural en el cual tiene lugar. EnglishFemicide –the murder of women motivated by gendered prejudices– is an extreme expression of gender-based violence. This article explores how this type of crime is represented in three Chilean newspapers that have wide audiences. Theoretically, we assume that deep-seated cultural representations on romantic relationships, and how men and women ought to behave in these, are at the very roots of gender-based violence. Mass media can contribute to reinforce these representations or, on the contrary, to undermine them. We argue the newspapers we analyzed approach extreme gender violence in an ambivalent way: on the one hand, they condemn it, but at the same time they rely on stereotypical understandings of gender roles and love relationships to build the news narrative. In doing so, they mask the socio-cultural factors behind gender violence, contributing to perpetuate it.
