Dynamically defined wild knots and Othoniel's My Way

2019
ABSTRACTThe piece Lacan's Knot, from French artist Othoniel's exposition My Way (2011) at Centre Pompidou, is a glass sculpture of a beaded knotted necklace. Due to the reflective medium, one can see the reflection of the necklace in itself in the surface of each bead, and these images reiterate indefinitely. This process creates a stunning effect which, mathematically speaking, is the projection of a ‘wild knot’ from the interior of the sculpture to its surface. The purpose of this paper is to explain some beautiful mathematical concepts about these kinds of knots and how they relate to Othoniel's piece.
