Validation of the Brazilian Version of the Fear of Dental Pain Questionnaire - Short Form (S-FDPQ)

OBJECTIVE: This study of Dental Pain Questionnaire has as its objective to validate the instrument Fear of Dental Pain Questionnaire (S-FDPQ) a reduced version to use with Brazilian adolescents. The Fear of Dental Pain Questionnaire (S-FDPQ) is a auto-managed instrument, and consists of 5 items that describe possible painful odontological procedures that evaluate, the fear of the pain that the individual has to go through associated with each situation. Each item is qualified in a likert scale of 5 points that evaluate the fear of pain. METHODS: The study had the participation of 233 adolescents of both sexes, of 14 to 19 years of age, registered in public and private schools in the city of Recife. The original instrument was submitted to the process of translation, retrotranslation and transcultural adaptation. RESULTS: After the face validation (n=20), the considered instrument was tested in a pilot study resulting in the used final version in this study. The instrument was then applied in a test and reverse speed-test with 182 adolescents of a collective form in the classroom environment. An Alpha coefficient of Cronbach of 0,82 was gotten; index of Kappa that varied of 0,56 the 0,84 the 0,84 intra-appraiser and 0,47 Inter-appraiser; evidencing raised internal consistency and satisfactory reproduction. CONCLUSION: One concludes that the Brazilian version presented one high trustworthiness and validity for use with Brazilian adolescents. Being of easy interpretation and application.
