Absceso cerebral: diagnóstico, manejo, complicaciones y pronóstico

The brain abscess is described as a collection of purulent material within the cerebral parenchyma that is focalized and encapsulatedin its final phase, in early stages before to encapsulation, swell of brain parenchyma known as cerebritis can be founded. There are several factors that predispose to develop this pathology and may be related to the prognosis. The etiology can be different depending on the patient immunological state and clinical condition that may be associated with it. Clinical signs and symptoms depends on the anatomical area that has been affected, although there is a characteristic symptomatic triad, this can be found in less than 50%, that’s why many other differential diagnosis must be considered. The diagnosis is based mainly on images; in this article it will be given a clear explanation of the different findings in studies with and without contrast. Empirical antibiotic treatment has been taken from published clinical articles and evidence based reviews available until now, it will be presented the recommendations to do surgical drainage and a change of antibiotics after get a culture report and antibiogram to reduce the risk of bacterial resistance.
